Dr. Doris Schueler has been in private practice in South Plainfield, NJ since 1982. She received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 1981 from St. John's University. Before starting her practice in 1982, she worked as a clinical psychologist at South Beach Psychiatric Center in Brooklyn, NY, where she treated adults, children, and families. Dr. Schueler has had extensive experience in treating children and adolescents as well as families.
Dr. Schueler was originally trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy but has also gained experience in cognitive-behavioral therapy. She is committed to treating the whole person in psychotherapy, rather than focusing solely on symptom relief. While most people seek therapy when they have significant distress due to emotional and relationship problems, Dr. Schueler is interested not only in helping people to overcome emotional obstacles, but also to helping people understand long-term patterns that may be interfering with their lives.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Schueler contributes professionally to several organizations. She is the President of the Middlesex County Association of Psychologists. Dr. Schueler serves on the board of Lavelle Preparatory Charter School in Staten Island, NY. She chairs the education and accountability committee for that board.
Dr. Schueler also has a long-standing interest in Latin American affairs. She is fluent in Spanish and conducts therapy in both English and Spanish. She served in Peace Corps in Colombia from 1967-1969. She traveled to El Salvador as part of Crisis Corps in order to provide training to local psychologists in San Salvador following two earthquakes that occurred there. In 2007, Dr. Schueler earned a Masters degree in Latin American Studies from New York University. She has continued to serve the Spanish-speaking community through her clinical work.
